Housing Options

There are many types of care and living options for older adults in Virginia. These include:

Independent Living Communities – Independent Living Communities in Virginia include senior housing or senior communities whose residents are at least 55-60 of age and older. Most locations offer meals, laundry, housekeeping and social activities. These locations are not licensed for care and would require assistance from an in-home care agency or caregiver, if needed.

Assisted Living – There are hundreds of Assisted Living communities in Central Virginia ranging from small Care Homes with 3-8 residents to larger locations with over 100 residents. These communities provide companionship, meal planning, housekeeping, social activities and transportation as well as assistance with activities of daily living (ADL’s) including bathing, hygiene, transfers, eating assistance, managing medications and more.

Memory Care – Many communities offer specialized care for residents with Alzheimer’s Disease or other forms of dementia. These include higher staff to resident ratios, care for all stages of dementia, and secure units. Many Assisted Living communities have a separate Memory Care section, and there are also stand-alone Memory Care communities.

Nursing Homes – These facilities are often called Skilled Nursing Facilities (SNF), Convalescent Centers, Rehabilitation or Post-Acute Care. Nursing Home patients require constant medical care, but at a lower level than a hospital. Nursing home patients usually require more medical care than residents in an Assisted Living facility, residential care home or Memory Care community.

In-Home Care – This type of service ranges from companionship, conversation, meal planning, housekeeping, errands, and transportation to activities of daily living such as bathing, hygiene, walking, and eating assistance. They do not include administration of medicine or medical treatment.
